Year of Establishment / Objectives

Mumbai Agricultural Produce Market Committee (APMC) is a statutory market committee constituted by the State Government for the trade of certain notified agricultural/horticultural/livestock produce. Mumbai Agricultural Produce Market Committee was established on 15th January, 1977 under the provisions of the Maharashtra Agricultural Produce (Marketing, Regulation and Development) Act, 1963. It is a body corporate under Section 12 of the said Act. Among others, the main objectives of the establishment of Mumbai APMC are as follows - to develop modern market premises for agricultural produce, to regulate the marketing of agricultural produce, to help farmers get better prices for their produce, to create infrastructure for the orderly development of trade, to manage and maintain markets and to fix terms and conditions for the use of markets in the market area. The committee has been established with the objective of regulating the marketing of agricultural and certain other produce, establishing markets for the same and for purposes incidental thereto. The Committee is required to control and supervise the marketing of agricultural produce in accordance with the provisions of the said Act, the rules made thereunder and the bye-laws of the Market Committee. The Committee is empowered to regulate the entry of persons and vehicles and to take all possible measures to prevent adulteration and to promote grading and standardization. The Committee is required to collect, preserve and provide information on the production, storage, processing, prices and movement of notified agricultural produce.

The Committee

It consists of representatives elected from among farmers, traders, mapari and mathadi. Also, representatives are nominated by the NNMC, BMC and the Marketing Director. The committee is expected to take decisions and supervise their implementation.

Market Area

The market area of the committee includes 30 villages in Brihanmumbai, Thane taluka and Uran taluka of Raigad district. In case of fruits and vegetables and onion, potato, the market area has been limited to market premises after the amendment in the Maharashtra Agricultural Produce Marketing (Development and Regulation) Act, 1963.

Secretary

A senior officer of the rank of Additional Registrar is appointed as the Secretary of Mumbai APMC. He is the administrative head of the organization. At present, Hon. Mr. Sharad Jare is working as the Secretary of Mumbai APMC.

Income and Expenditure

Transfer fee has been increased for transfer of properties given on long term lease i.e. shops, offices, canteens etc. Due to this, the income from transfer fee has increased.
